Edit Window

Edit Mode is designed to ‘chop-up’ media files into pieces over time called segments, & for those segments to be named. You can also Filter for specific segments using the Edit Window. Segments can also be placed into groups. It might be helpful to consider segments and groups as shots and scenes. See Segments & Groups for more detail.

The ‘Segmenting’ process can be undertaken manually or automatically, see Autosegmentation for more details. Once segments have been created, they can be named, & the file is then ready for descriptions to be added in Notate Mode.

The Edit Interface

1: Scrubbing Options

This control enables you to choose between three video scrubbing options. Scrubbing is moving through video files by dragging the playhead from side to side along a timeline. Please refer to the Scrubber Modes page for more details.

2: Group & Segments Name Text Boxes & Navigation Buttons

This part of the interface enables groups & segments to be named, it also provides a set of segment & group navigation buttons, & displays the total number of segments & groups. Please note that when either of the text boxes are active, the video navigation interface will not work as expected - for example, the spacebar will add a space in the text box, not play / pause the video. To escape the text field, either press the return or escape key.

3: Selection Display

This text display will show information about the current selection.

4: Timecode Display

The Timecode Display shows a variety of time information about the currently loaded video. Please refer to the Timecode page for detailed information about this display.

5: Zoom Controls

These controls provide a number of ways to increase the size of specific parts of the timeline. Please refer to the Zoom page for specific details.

6: Timeline

The Timeline displays the segments & groups within the current video file. The following diagram shows the various graphic elements that make up the timeline display:

You can click on a segment to select it, or click & drag in the timeline to select multiple segments. Please note that a variety of keyboard shortcuts are available for selecting groups of segments & for navigating to specific segments.

7: Playhead & Scrubber Control

This interface element is just like a normal software video player like Quicktime. Double clicking on the playhead provides a shortcut for switching between video & image scrubbing.

8: Dynamic Frame Display

This display enables a real time stream of frames to be viewed. See Dynamic Frame Display for more information.

9: Group Button

This button enables one or more segments to be turned into a group of segments. To create a group, select one or more segments & click the group button. To ungroup, follow the same process in reverse.

10: Cut / Clear Cut Button

This button creates or deletes a 'Cut' on the timeline. This is how Frameline creates segments. Please refer the Cut & Clear page for more details. When you create a cut, a poster frame image is automatically created to represent that segment, & it is these images that are shown while scrubbing in image mode. You can manually edit poster frame images by moving the playhead to the frame you wish to represent the segment, & choosing 'Timeline / Set Poster Frame' from the Menu. Please refer to the Poster Frame Image page for more details.

11: Mark & Show/Hide/Only controls

Segment marking is the method by which video is edited in the application. You select a segment in the timeline & click on the 'Mark' button to mark a segment. Marked segments can then be hidden or isolated in the timeline by using the 'Show, Hide or Only' buttons. Please refer to the Mark S.H.O page for more information.

Split File Tool

New to Version 3.2 is a Split File Tool. This tool enables new files to be created from individual Segments or Groups. New files created this way will automtically inherit Segment metadata. To access the Split Files Tool, select a Segmented file in any mode, then choose 'Split File' from the Advanced/Menu. This will bring up the Split File window;

The window above shows the Split options. You can Split from Segments or from Groups (the source file above has no groups) You can choose to name the resulting files from either the file name or the Segment/Group name.

You can also choose to add 'handles' to the output. This option will add a number of frames to both the start and end point of the segments. Please note that handles will not be added to the first and last segments of files.

Click 'OK' to choose the location you would like the new files to be saved to. Please note that the new files that are created will not be re-encoded, and therefore be identical in format to the source file. See consolidate for more information.
