Metadata
Frameline is essentially a metadata generator. Metadata means 'data about data', & in the case of Frameline, this means data about video. Video is a time based media, & Frameline uses the concept of segments against which to store data.
Frameline metadata is stored in MPEG-7 compliant XML. This data is automatically saved into the video file itself, as well as being parsed into the application's database.
A stand alone XML metadata file can be generated from the application by using the Export functionality.

The Frameline Metadata File (.fl)
The Frameline Metadata File is used to enable the transfer of descriptive data without needing to transfer the actual video file. To match a Frameline Metadata file to a video file, use the match metadata function, please refer to Match Metadata below for more information.
The Frameline Metadata file is in a proprietary file format, with a .fl extension:

To create a Frameline Metadata file, either choose 'Timeline / Export' from the Menu, or File ‘Save As’ from the menu when a file is selected.

Match Metadata
The Match Metadata function enables you to merge metadata and media togther. This functionality is useful to interchange descriptive files (where both sender and recipient have the same source media) and if some time based annotation has been performed using a third party application.
To match a metadata file to your current file, open up your source file in any window of the application, and choose ‘match metadata’ from the menu/advanced. Browse to the corresponding metadata file and click open.

Once matched, you will be prompted to save the file.
Using CSV & Text Files
To perform a match metadata with a CSV (comma de-limited text file) or a tab de-limited text file, your text list must list, in point, out point, then name, as follows;
Comma de-limited
00:10:10:00,00:10:12:20,name of the segment
[Note: Avoid commas within the name of the segment, then the match will fail]
Tab de-limited
00:10:10:00[TAB]00:10:12:20[TAB]name of the segment
[Note: Avoid commas within the name of the segment, then the match will fail]

Metadata Warnings
A number of the actions that you can take in the application could have the effect of destroying descriptive data:
1.Removing a Cut in Edit Mode
2.Removing a Group in Edit or Notate Mode
3.Attempting to merge Segments in Edit Mode
4.Attempting to Paste Segment or Group Data onto another Segment or Group
When one of these destructive actions is attempted, a warning dialogue will appear, so as to provide the opportunity to cancel the operation.
